V polovině července tohoto roku přišel studentům e-mail oznamující výrazné změny ve struktuře Filozofické fakulty UK s platností k 1. lednu 2027. Transformace se má mimo jiných dotknout i Katedry divadelní vědy, která se má sloučit do společného ústavu spolu s Katedru filmových studií a Ústavem hudební vědy.
V současné chvíli stále přetrvává řada nezodpovězených otázek týkajících se budoucího postavení oboru, jeho vedení, personálního zabezpečení, podoby studijních programů i samotného fungování připravovaného ústavu, přestože se má o reorganizaci rozhodnout již na začátku září. Takto zásadní změny si zaslouží podstatně delší čas na odbornou diskusi, důkladnou přípravu i pečlivé vyhodnocení jejich dopadů. Jejich důsledky totiž neovlivní pouze současné studenty a pedagogy, ale také budoucí podobu české teatrologie a vysokoškolského vzdělávání v oblasti divadelní vědy.
Jsme si vědomi toho, že se vysoké školy musejí přizpůsobovat měnícím se společenským, ekonomickým i organizačním podmínkám. Neodmítáme proto samotnou myšlenku reorganizace, avšak za zásadní považujeme, aby tato reorganizace nevedla ke ztrátě svébytnosti oboru divadelní vědy.
Pražská divadelní věda představuje jedno z nejvýznamnějších pracovišť české teatrologie a dlouhodobě systematicky rozvíjí výzkum dějin českého divadla. Katedra divadelní vědy připravuje budoucí teatrology, dramaturgy, divadelní kritiky, historiky divadla, kurátory, pedagogy i pracovníky kulturních institucí. Oslabení oboru by proto nepředstavovalo pouze změnu organizační struktury univerzity, ale mělo by dopad na celé české divadelní prostředí.
Jsme přesvědčeni, že podobně významné kroky mají být výsledkem dlouhodobých analýz, širší akademické diskuse a dialogu s akademickou obcí, nikoli procesu odehrávajícího se ve velmi krátkém časovém horizontu. Znepokojení vyvolávají také informace o plánovaném omezení pedagogických úvazků k 1. lednu 2027. Již dnes zajišťuje obor výuku přibližně devadesáti studentů s velmi omezeným počtem pedagogických pracovníků. Další snižování personálního zabezpečení může významně ovlivnit kvalitu výuky, vedení kvalifikačních prací, vědeckou činnost i celkovou stabilitu oboru, čímž by byla ohrožena práva studentů dokončit studium.
Vyzýváme proto vedení Filozofické fakulty Univerzity Karlovy, aby zveřejnilo jasnou koncepci reorganizace, vedlo otevřenou a transparentní diskusi se studenty, pedagogy, absolventy i odbornou veřejností a garantovalo zachování divadelní vědy jako svébytného a plnohodnotného oboru v rámci nově vznikajícího ústavu, včetně vlastního odborného vedení.

Petition to Preserve the Sovereignty of the Department of Theatre Studies at the Faculty of Arts
In mid-July of this year, students received an email announcing significant changes to the structure of the Faculty of Arts at Charles University. These changes are scheduled to take effect on the 1st of January, 2027. Among other units, the Department of Theatre Studies is expected to be merged with the Department of Film Studies and the Institute of Musicology into a newly established institute.
At present, many important questions remain unanswered regarding the future status of the discipline, its governance, staffing, the structure of its study programmes, and the functioning of the newly proposed institute. A final decision on the reorganization is expected at the beginning of September. Such fundamental changes deserve substantially more time for professional discussion, thorough preparation, and careful assessment of their potential impact. The consequences of this reorganization will affect not only current students and academic staff, but also the future of Czech theatre studies and higher education in this field.
We recognize that universities must adapt to changing socioeconomic and organizational conditions. We therefore do not reject the idea of reorganization as such. However, we believe it is essential that any reorganization does not result in the loss of the Department of Theatre Studies’ academic identity, originality, and distinctiveness.
The Prague Department of Theatre Studies is one of the leading centres of Czech theatre scholarship and has long played a crucial role in research on Czech theatre history. It educates future theatre scholars, dramaturgs, critics, historians, curators, educators, and employees of cultural institutions. Weakening the department would therefore not constitute merely an internal organizational change within the university, but rather a step with consequences for the Czech theatre community as a whole.
We believe steps of such significance should be based on long-term analysis, broad academic discussion, and meaningful consultation with the academic community, rather than implemented through a process unfolding within a very short period of time. We are also concerned by the information received regarding the planned reduction in teaching staff from the 1st of January, 2027. The department currently provides education for approximately 90 students with a very limited number of academic staff. Any further reduction in staffing could seriously affect the quality of teaching, the supervision of theses, research activities, and the overall stability of the discipline, thereby jeopardizing students’ ability to complete their studies under appropriate conditions.
We therefore call on the leadership of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, to publish a clear and detailed concept for the proposed reorganization and to engage in an open and transparent discussion with students, academic staff, alumni, and the wider professional community. We further urge the university to guarantee the preservation of Theatre Studies as a distinct and fully fledged academic discipline, with adequate professional autonomy and staffing within the newly established institute.
